Top Speed on a Mac?
Modified By AaronTBird on 2/12/2007 7:21:57 PM)

This is an email that I received today from a customer :

Subject: Online!!!

Aaron,

Thanks for getting me and Billy back online.  My Mac doesn't seem to be able to use the bandwidth very well.  I guess it's configured wrong but Billy and I can't seem to get it working anywhere near as fast as his PC.  I just did a speed test with n SpeakEasy and it said:

Seattle

5717 kbps down

4089 kbps up

San Francisco

3780 kbps down

3182 kbps up

Dallas

2115 kbps down

1518 kbps up

Chicage

3470 kbps down

3500 kbps up

New York

2337 kbps down

2280 kbps up

I don't know if that info helps you but I thought you might be interested.

Thanks

Jim

Re: Top Speed on a Mac?

My reply:

Jim,

The first thing I would do is check to see if you have a lot of programs open at the time, an also see how much memory/cpu you have. My Daughters have an iMac, but it only has 512k of RAM and it isn’t nearly as fast as the rest of the computers in the house. My Wife has a PowerMac Dual Processor G4 Server with 2 Gig of RAM and it has full speed.

Also, there are a number of networking optimizations that can be done, have Billy check out this page:

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

and then consult this one for making the recommended changes

 http://www.dslreports.com/faq/allthingsmac/7_Networking

Regards,

Aaron

What are your service levels

I am wondering if you provide services to business like routable CIDR blocks on the order of a /28.  I would need to run name servers, a mail server, a web server and a terminal server for remote access.

Thanks

Re: What are your service levels

Yes, we do provide many business class services, including those you require.

Fell free to give me a call to discuss details and such.

Re: What are your service levels

I run a server at home on my Tbird connection and it works GREAT!!!

You got to love equally fast upload speeds!
